A slow computer is one of the most common problems we see — and one of the most misdiagnosed. "Must be a virus" or "time for a new one" are almost never the right answer. Here's how to actually think about it.
THE REAL CAUSES
- Spinning hard drive — The single most common cause. An SSD replacement transforms most "slow" machines.
- Insufficient RAM — When RAM runs out, Windows uses the drive as overflow. Performance falls off a cliff.
- Startup bloat — Dozens of programs loading at boot, consuming resources all day.
- Thermal throttling — A dusty, overheating machine reduces its own CPU speed to survive.
- Nearly full drive — Spinning drives slow dramatically above 85% capacity.
⚠️ Before spending $800+ on a new computer, spend $100 on a diagnosis. The majority of slow computers are fixable for under $150.
HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR BOTTLENECK
Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) while the computer is sluggish. Check the Performance tab. CPU near 100%: software problem. RAM maxed: need more memory. Disk at 100% constantly: your storage is the bottleneck — almost certainly a spinning drive.
THE FIX: WHICH SSD DO YOU NEED?
If your disk is the bottleneck, an SSD upgrade is the single most impactful thing you can do. The right drive depends on what your machine has. Check your current drive first — if it's a spinning hard drive in a standard drive bay, you need a 2.5" SATA SSD. If your motherboard has an M.2 slot, go NVMe for significantly better performance. Not sure? Check Device Manager under Disk Drives, or look up your laptop model. If in doubt, call us — we'll tell you in two minutes.
